Aug. 25, 2009 | On Monday afternoon, the Justice Department released a report by the CIA inspector general on the CIA’s interrogation procedures and use of “enhanced interrogation techniques.” The May 2004 review provides many disturbing details about just what enhanced interrogation entails. Salon has culled two dozen pages from the 234-page report that describe, among other things, diapering, mock executions, threats to kill a detainee’s children and the use of a power drill for interrogations, a technique once employed by Saddam Hussein. The report indicates that some agency personnel were worried that they would later have to answer for these interrogations in court.

Justice Dept Eyes Narrow ‘Investigation’ Into CIA Torture

Following decisions by Attorney General Eric Holder, the Justice Department is set to appoint John Durham to lead a fresh inquiry into the assorted violations of anti-torture law committed by the CIA and its contractors. Durham was previously charged with deciding if the destruction of CIA videotapes showing waterboarding constituted obstruction of justice.

Anglo-American Ties ‘Threatened’ as Clinton Moves to Block Release of Torture Evidence

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has personally intervened in a high profile British case today, pressuring for a “gag order” in an attempt to keep evidence of CIA torture from being released by the British government and warning it could affect intelligence ties between the two nations.
